John Klein and his wife Mary are out house shopping, and they find the house they’ve been looking for. On their way home they crash and a few weeks later in the hospital Mary dies. John then, in Mary’s hospital room, finds strange drawings of what looks like a man with wings. It has been two years and John is driving one night, he loses track of where he’s going and ends up in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Once he arrives his car breaks down, so he goes and asks this guy to use the phone, when he knocks on the door the guy attacks him saying that he’s been knocking on the door asking to use the phone for the past three nights. Now strange things start to happen as John decides to stay around in Point Pleasant. There have been over 20 sightings of some creature that is eight feet tall with wings, the creature was dubbed the Mothman. Soon John realizes that this creatures, whatever it is, is giving him hints of something bad that will happen. So John tries to figure it out for himself so he can stop it before it happens.
When I went to see this movie, I really wasn’t expecting to find anything that would be really creepy, but I sure was surprised. For the entire film it is all about mood and atmosphere. It started out rather slow and I was a bit confused as to what was going to happen, then once John arrived in Point Pleasant everything just started to fall together. That’s when the strange things start to happen. A new friend of John’s, Gordon, starts to see and hear strange things. Some strange noise awakes him one night, and as he goes into the bathroom a voice comes from the sink, “99 will die in Denver.” Gordon doesn’t know what to think of it, so he tells John. They soon hear that a plain crashed in Denver about a week or so later and 99 people were killed. Then eventually John starts to see and hear things. His phone rings one night, and the voice sounds like Gordon’s, and then he begins to talking to someone by the name of Ingred Cold. The voice on the phone knows everything John is doing, he knows what John is holding in his hand, he can read the page that John reads out of a book. Soon John realizes that Ingred Cold is giving him hints of things to come. I really didn’t know what to expect when I walked into the theater to see this. But as I left I was shocked. It’s been a while since I have seen a film that is as scary as this one is. I found myself creeped out all throughout the film. And the shocking part is that this supposedly happened back in the late 60’s. I have a feeling that this’ll be one of the strong contenders for best horror film of 2002. And if all the other horror films of this year are going to be as good as this one, then I expect this year to be a really good year for horror films. I give this movie a 9 out of 10.
