Dellamorte DellamoreFrancesco Dellamorte, which translates as Francis of Death, is a caretaker at the local cemetery.  At this cemetery he is supposed to just bury the dead, but he has an extra job because only a few days after they die the dead rises again, and it is up to Dellamorte to kill the dead by shooting them in the head.  Now as he finds his true love, she is bitten by a zombie and he must do the same for her, but things go wrong when she continues to return as other people.

The movie opens with us being introduced to Francesco Dellamorte, played by Rupert Everett.  He gets a knock on the door and he goes to answer it.  Standing at the door is a decomposing corpse who has just risen from the dead.  Dellamorte just raises his gun and shoots it in the head.  This is what he does and he is used to it.  Dellamorte is assisted by a man named Gnaghi.  Gnaghi is a mentally retarded man who is in love with the mayor’s daughter.  When the mayor’s daughter is killed in a motorcycle accident she comes back to life, and Gnaghi keeps her head.  Dellamorte also finds love in a woman who has just recently lost her husband.  When her husband comes back to life he bits her and Dellamorte has to do what he never dreamed he could do, and that is shoot her in the head when she comes back.  He does this with his eyes closed and she eventually returns as a returner.  A returner is what Dellamorte calls the dead that come back to life.  Well when she rises again he realizes that she wasn’t dead when he first shot her and he ended up killing the only woman he ever loved.  Soon he starts to see her again as different people.  One as the new mayor’s assistant and again as a young college girl.  Sadly it never works out and he is left with the fact that the only one who actually cared about him as much as he cared for her was the one he ended up killing.  Soon Dellamorte has a run in with the Grim Reaper and he tells Dellamorte to stop killing the dead because the dead belong to him.  He says that the only way to keep them from rising again is to kill the living.  So Dellamorte takes this advice and goes after the living in his town.

I had heard nothing but great things about this film so I of course wanted to check it out.  I remember seeing bits and pieces of it a long time ago, but I never could remember much of it or even if I liked it.  Well, now that I finally got the chance to see the movie in its entirety I found it to be an excellent film.  There are some really good zombie effects in this movie, but it’s not overly gory.  We get a wonderfully directed film, and the acting is great.  Rupert Everett does a wonderful job as Francesco Dellamorte.  This is the third movie of Michele Soavi that I have seen.  The first one I saw I loved, which was Stage Fright.  The second film of his I saw was The Church and I didn’t like that one at all, so I was a bit hesitant about seeing this because I may just not be into Michele Soavi’s films.  Anyway, after viewing this I found that he is a great director and this movie was great.  It is probably one of the best films to come out of the 90’s.  I highly recommend you checking out this film.  I give it a 9 out of 10.
