American Psycho 2When Rachel Newman was 12 years old, she had a truly horrific experience.   Her babysitter decided to pay a romantic visit to our old friend Patrick Bateman and drag her along.  Patrick, being a true gentleman, ties them both up and proceeds to murder the babysitter.  While she is viewing all of this, Rachel is able to untie herself.  Rather then flee, she decides to off Bateman with an ice pick and calmly leave the building.

Now fast forward 6 years.  Rachel is a successful college freshman enrolled at West Washington College.  After her childhood experience, she has decided to become an FBI agent and stop the murderous psychopaths of the world.  Her favorite class is criminology and is taught by Professor Robert Starkman, a former hot shot FBI agent who decided to become a college professor.  Because he is such hot stuff, 9 out of 10 of his teacher assistants have been accepted at Quantico, the FBI’s top training school.  Knowing this, Rachel sets her sights on being Starkmans next TA.  Unfortunately, everyone in the class also wants this position, but only three pose a threat to her.  There’s the rich stupid white kid, the slutty chick thats having an affair with Professor Starkman and the smart, crazy haired black kid.  Rather then have it fair and square, Rachel decides that the best course of action is to kill the competition.

When I heard about this movie, I departed on an emotional roller coaster.  First, I almost died of laughter.  Seriously though.  With a title like American Psycho 2: All American Girl, this has to be a joke right?  Once I got over the hilariousness of it all, I became depressed.  I didn’t really like the first movie, let alone the book.  Then I heard about the plot and started to laugh again.  Lastly, I read an article in Fangoria where the director, Morgan J. Freeman, completely admits that Lions Gate had just dusted off an older unused script and loosely connected it to the first American Psycho.  When I read this, I just about cried.  Why is Hollywood so damn cruel?

When I finally received a screener from Lions Gate, I didn’t know what to do at first.  Should I pop it in and watch it?  Should I let it sit around and collect dust, waiting until the last minute to review it?  In the end, I decided to have a couple of friends over.  We slapped the DVD in the player and hoped for the best.

When the movie finished up,  we looked at each other in amazement.  Can it be possible?  This movie was actually good?  Yep, as hard as it is to believe, we all agreed that this movie was a fun hour and a half.

The story, while stupid at times, is extremely funny and had me cracking up on more then one occasion.  The idea that this girl would kill a bunch of people in order to become a TA is hilarious.  Also, while American Psycho 2 isn’t too bloody, some of the death scenes are cool and funny.

Just about all of this movie’s atmosphere can be credited to the musical score.  It completely lightens the tone and makes this movie much more fun.  Without it, American Psycho 2 would be dull and uninteresting.

The acting in this film is mixed.  Mila Kunis as the smart, sexy and deadly Rachel was perfect for the role.  Her character comes off as a fun loving homicidal psycho bitch.  Not to mention the fact that she is absolutely smoking hot!  William Shatner in the role of Professor Robert Starkman is…… interesting.  I kept on waiting for him to blurt out something about Priceline.com.  Even though this isn’t saying much, I do have to admit that this is his best performance yet.  Shatner fans rejoice!

Overall, American Psycho 2 is a fun movie.  I recommend it as a good rental.  Just think of it as a standalone film and not as a  sequel.  Also, watch it with a group of friends.  You’ll enjoy it much more that way.  I give it a 7 out of 10.
